Tanzania Safari

Experience Tanzania at its wildest.

Vast open plains. Extraordinary wildlife. Ancient landscapes.

And some of the most iconic safari destinations on Earth.

A safari through Tanzania brings you remarkably close to the rhythms of the wild. Watch elephants moving beneath ancient baobabs, search the open plains for lion and cheetah, descend into the wildlife-rich Ngorongoro Crater or witness thousands of wildebeest moving across the Serengeti during the Great Migration.

At Crafted Safari Co. we don't believe there is one way to experience Tanzania. Your safari can be shaped around the places you want to see, the time you have available, your preferred style of accommodation and the experiences that matter most to you.

Extraordinary Wildlife

Experience some of Africa's greatest concentrations of wildlife, including lion, elephant, buffalo, giraffe, cheetah, leopard and, with some luck, rhino.

Iconic National parks

Combine world-renowned destinations such as the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater with smaller parks and more remote wilderness areas.

The Great Migration

Follow one of nature's most remarkable spectacles as enormous herds of wildebeest and zebra move through the Serengeti ecosystem.

Why Choose Tanzania for Your Safari?

Few destinations offer the sheer variety of wildlife and landscapes found in Tanzania.

Its northern safari circuit brings together some of Africa's most celebrated wilderness areas within one remarkable journey - from the elephant-rich landscapes of Tarangire to the vast Serengeti plains and the natural amphitheatre of the Ngorongoro Crater.

Game drives take you through constantly changing environments where no two days - or even two drives - are quite the same. You may find a pride of lions resting in the grass, elephants gathering at a water source, giraffes crossing the horizon or predators following migrating herds.

And sometimes, it's simply the scale and stillness of the landscape that stays with you.

Why choose Tanzania
Safari Destinations

Explore Tanzania's Safari Destinations

No two areas of Tanzania offer quite the same experience. From the baobab-dotted landscapes of Tarangire and the wildlife-rich Ngorongoro Crater to the endless plains of the Serengeti and the raw beauty of Lake Natron, each destination brings something different to your safari.

Many of Tanzania’s most iconic safari areas can be combined within one journey, allowing you to experience dramatically changing landscapes, wildlife habitats and scenery as you travel.

Your itinerary can be shaped around what matters most to you - whether that’s exceptional wildlife viewing, the Great Migration, dramatic landscapes, birdlife or simply spending more time immersed in the wilderness.

Tarangire National Park_edited.jpg

Tarangire National Park

Elephants, baobabs and a landscape with a character all its own.

Covering about 2,850 square kilometers, Tarangire National Park is Tanzania’s sixth-largest park and a key dry-season refuge for wildlife.

As water sources shrink, thousands of animals migrate across the parched landscape toward the permanent Tarangire River, creating one of East Africa’s most dramatic wildlife gatherings. Large elephant herds, sometimes reaching 300 individuals, dig into dry riverbeds for underground water, while wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, and various antelope crowd the remaining lagoons. This seasonal concentration attracts numerous predators and offers exceptional viewing.

The park is also known for its baobab-dotted scenery, tree-climbing lions, and regular sightings of giraffes, waterbucks, baboons, and rare species like gerenuk and fringe-eared oryx.

Ngorongoro crater_edited.jpg

Ngorongoro crater

A natural sanctuary unlike anywhere else.

The Ngorongoro Crater was formed when a volcano collapsed two to three million years ago, creating the world’s sixth-largest intact caldera instead of a mountain that might have rivaled Kilimanjaro.

About 610 meters deep and covering roughly 260 square kilometers, the crater now shelters an estimated 25,000 animals within its natural walls. Nearly every major East African species is found here, including the Big Five, thriving on fertile grasslands, forests, and soda lakes.

The wider Ngorongoro Conservation Area allows wildlife and Maasai communities to coexist, while nearby Olduvai Gorge - often called the “Cradle of Mankind” - holds important fossil discoveries that shaped our understanding of human evolution.

Northern Serengeti_edited.jpg

Northern Serengeti (Kogatende)

Remote wilderness and dramatic river crossings.

The Northern Serengeti, particularly the Kogatende region, offers excellent year-round wildlife viewing, with resident animals and lion prides sometimes reaching up to 30 individuals.

From August to October, the area becomes especially exciting as migrating herds gather around the Mara River. River crossings are the main highlight, though they can be unpredictable - herds may linger near the banks for days before deciding whether to cross, making sightings partly a matter of luck. The landscape is equally impressive, featuring rocky kopjes, woodlands, riverine vegetation, and open plains.

This scenic mix closely resembles Kenya’s Masai Mara and creates a beautiful, wildlife-rich safari setting.

Lake Manyara National Park_edited.jpg

Lake Manyara National Park

Small in scale. Remarkably diverse.

Lake Manyara National Park may be small, but it offers impressive wildlife diversity within a compact area. Its mix of habitats - including groundwater forests, open grasslands, and the alkaline lake - supports a wide range of animals. Visitors can spot elephants, lions, leopards, giraffes, hippos, buffalo, zebras, wildebeest, and playful troops of baboons and monkeys, along with smaller species like dik-dik and gazelles.

The park is also a bird lover’s haven, with over 400 recorded species. It’s especially known for flamingos that gather in large pink flocks during the wet season, though numbers drop in the dry months.

Scenic landscapes and abundant wildlife make it rewarding year-round.

Serengeti National Park_edited.png

Serengeti National Park

Where the wild stretches to the horizon.

Tanzania’s oldest and most popular national park, the Serengeti is best known for the Great Migration, when millions of hooves thunder across the plains as wildebeest, joined by hundreds of thousands of zebra and Thomson’s gazelles, move in search of fresh grazing.

Even outside migration season, wildlife viewing remains exceptional, with large buffalo herds, elephants, giraffes, and plenty of antelope species spread across the savannah. Predators are a constant presence, from lion prides and elusive leopards to cheetahs on the open plains, along with hyenas and jackals.

Vast, open landscapes stretch to the horizon, turning from golden grasslands to vibrant green after seasonal rains.

Lake Natron_edited.jpg

Lake Natron

Raw, remote and completely unexpected.

Wild and remote, Lake Natron lies in northeastern Tanzania between the Ngorongoro Highlands and the Serengeti plains. Here, the dramatic landscape takes center stage more than wildlife, with dry, stark scenery that feels both desolate and strikingly beautiful.

The area, traditionally inhabited by Maasai communities, offers unique experiences such as walks to hot springs, the Ngare Sero waterfalls, and other hidden spots. Set at the base of Oldonyo Lengai, Africa’s only active volcano, Lake Natron is one of the world’s most alkaline lakes.

Its mineral-rich waters support tiny crustaceans that attract thousands of lesser flamingos, making it one of the most important flamingo breeding sites on Earth.

Serengeti Wildebeest Migration

The Great Wildebeest Migration is one of the most spectacular wildlife events on Earth - a year-round movement of vast herds across the Serengeti and into Kenya’s Maasai Mara in search of fresh grazing and water. This incredible journey involves over a million wildebeest, accompanied by hundreds of thousands of zebra and smaller numbers of gazelles and antelope, all following an ancient and instinctive cycle driven by rainfall.

The migration typically begins in the southern Serengeti, around Ndutu and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where the short rains arrive in November. By December, the plains are filled with wildlife, drawn to the fresh, nutrient-rich grasses. The herds remain here through January, February, and March - a particularly special time, as hundreds of thousands of wildebeest calves are born within a short period, attracting predators and creating dramatic wildlife encounters.

As the dry season approaches in April and May, the herds begin their journey north and west, forming long, moving columns across the Serengeti. By June, many gather in the Western Corridor near the Grumeti River, where they often pause before attempting river crossings. While these crossings can be intense, they are generally less dramatic than those further north.

Between July and September, the migration continues northward, spreading across the northern Serengeti. Here, the Mara River presents one of the greatest challenges of the journey. The river crossings are among the most iconic safari moments - chaotic, powerful, and unpredictable - as thousands of animals surge through crocodile-filled waters in a fight for survival.

By October, the herds begin their return south, moving back through the Serengeti towards the southern plains as the rains begin again. With the arrival of fresh grazing in November, the cycle starts anew - continuing one of nature’s most extraordinary and enduring spectacles.

It’s important to note that while this pattern is broadly predictable, the exact timing and movement of the migration vary each year, depending on rainfall and environmental conditions.
